Kerala Flood Response Project, NSE Foundation; 2019
In continuation of its response work in Kerala, RedR India focussed on building technical resources and capacities through early recovery actions on WASH and DRR in Kerala in support of and in partnership with key government departments. The aim to RedR’s work was to provide access to safe drinking water for the flood-affected communities and the build capacities of the affected community and administration on water quality, testing and treatment as well enhance the humanitarian and disaster risk reduction capacities and processes at the panchayat level.
RedR undertook extensive capacity building of communities in partnership with the quasi-government body, Kudumbashree, and the Health Department at district level and improved preparedness, knowledge and skills on water quality testing and treatment. In total, RedR built a cadre of 277 master trainers who, in turn, trained over 1750 households through field level training in 7 flood-affected districts of Kerala.
RedR undertook 14 training courses on landslide risk management based with Gram Panchayats across 08 districts of Kerala. All the selected panchayats had been affected by landslides. The courses reached out to 364 persons across government, civil society and panchayats. This training blended classroom and field-exercise and benefitted the Gram Panchayat officials in landslide affected/prone-areas towards increasing their knowledge about landslides and its management at the local level.
RedR also developed a guideline for risk-informed programming to be used by the 13th Working Group of the Panchayats in Kerala for Mainstreaming DRR at the GP level. The guideline and process had a pilot intervention under the leadership of KILA in two panchayats of Thrissur District in Kerala.
Our work in Kerala was extensively supported by NSE Foundation.
Kerala Flood Response, NSE Foundation; 2018
RedR India actively engaged in response work through the provision of technical support to the district authorities and capacity building activities in worst affected areas to ensure effective humanitarian and early recovery actions. Targeting the urgent need of clean water in the immediate aftermath of floods, RedR India in partnership with NSE Foundation, and in collaboration with the Kerala Forest Department and Local Panchayats, reached out to remote forest areas and marginalized communities in various districts of Kerala to assist with making available safe drinking water to communities by deploying Water Filtration Systems and promoting key WASH messages to prevent break-out of water-related diseases. RedR India also facilitated training course for Government officials and frontline workers on water quality testing and treatment in 5 worst affected districts. The major tasks undertaken by RedR deployees organising and delivering training on Behaviour Change Communication for health workers, development of Well Treatment protocols, creation of Guidelines for Well Protection and Septic Tank Rehabilitation, Assessment of Damage to WaSH systems in affected Schools, Development of Module on Landslide Risk Mitigation for Panchayats and Demonstration of Twin Pit Septic waste management systems.
Earthquake Response, Christian Aid, Nepal; 2015

Flash Floods Response, Jammu and Kashmir, UNICEF India; 2014
Following the flash floods in 2014, RedR India deployed a surging team to undertake rapid needs assessment which then informed UNICEF’s response and recovery initiative while providing vital assessment information to the wider sector. Following the assessment, RedR established the Srinagar District Coordination Support under the aegis of the District Collectorate and managed the multi-partner INGO and NGO response supported by UNICEF India across the districts. Conflict Response and Recovery, UNICEF Chattisgarh, India; (2006-2012)
From 2006 to 2012 RedR India worked in Dantewada region of Chattisgarh in partnership with UNICEF India. During the course of 6 years, RedR India supported UNICEF’s interventions on public health, nutrition, education and protection.
The work of RedR India initially involved implementation support through deployments for Public Health Engineering, Public Health Promotion, Project Management and Programme Design. This was often complemented with capacity building interventions with local actors and set up of essential services and facilities in temporary camps. In 2010, RedR India carried out a security and safety review through an integrated assessment of the impact of the socio-political environment and actors on programme service delivery. Later that year, RedR India was engaged in a medium-term assignment for building Hygiene Promotion capacities among WASH volunteers in Dantewada to enhance access to WASH services and communication outreach. The capacity building process importantly involved the development of IEC (Information, Education, Communication) material in the local dialects with contextual visuals resulting in a kit that was therefore widely accepted and applied by all stakeholders engaged in public health service delivery. This was also complemented with capacity building and outreach for improved water supply with the Public Health Engineering Department. As a phase-out mechanism, RedR India deployed a monitoring and evaluation specialist to work with the local partners to develop, apply and sustain an MIS system through remote management and building of local capacities and resources.
